www.parents-aid.org.uk
Parents Aid is a voluntary organisation and registered charity, (no.1018739) founded in 1989. We at Parents Aid aim to help families stay together and achieve independence from state intervention by providing a wide range of services that assist and support parents who need help to overcome difficulties.
Parents Aid understands that the pressures of everyday living and the challenges to received standards presented by modern society can leave parents feeling bewildered, isolated, overwhelmed and with sense of no longer being able to cope. Asking for help at this point can be one of the hardest things a parent can do, for fear of being judged and labelled by others. Parents Aid acknowledges the difficulties parents experience when seeking information on resources in their area for assistance in addressing problem areas.
Previously Parents’ Aid only covered Southern Essex and Thurrock, but in 2006 we expanded to cover Colchester and the surrounding area.
Parents Aid Services
Parents’ Aid holds surgeries in various localities where individuals can meet with our staff to obtain information or discuss concerns. These surgeries operate as drop-in facilities, but to avoid overlapping with other users it is best to ring and make an appointment. There is no waiting list and you will be seen promptly. If you are unable to get to us we can arrange for a home visit or you can talk on the phone.
Our help line numbers are – 01268 763631 or 07890 861255.
At Parents Aid you will be able to talk informally and in confidence to our trained volunteers who are happy to listen to your problems and help you to resolve them. There are a number of ways we may be able to assist you: -
Support – If you just need a friendly face to listen to you, someone to attend an appointment with you, some help finding information or making a phone call, we are ready to help.
Advocacy – When parents meet with professionals to discuss their personal situation, they may feel intimidated, powerless and find the whole experience distressing. As a result parents sometimes find that they are unable to voice their views. Knowing that someone is on your side whilst attending these meetings can help you to express yourself coherently and create a better understanding. Parents Aid provides trained volunteers who will attend meetings with you, be a second pair of ears when you may be unable to take in all that is said, or speak on your behalf if you feel that you are unable.
Counselling – Parents Aid are able to offer personal therapy with an accredited counsellor, who will listen to your problems in confidence and where possible help you to deal with your feelings and find practical solutions. Sometimes just sharing your burden with someone else is enough to make you feel stronger.
Mediation – We have trained volunteers who are able to carry out mediation between family members, especially between parents and children where a difference of opinion cannot be solved amicably. We provide a neutral environment, give both parties the opportunity to put their side forward and then look for solutions or compromises that both find acceptable. The mediator will be impartial and non-judgmental, her only objective to resolve conflict so that both parties come away with a better deal.
Anger and Aggression Management – This is a program that can be delivered one-to-one or in a group. It is designed to help you understand and deal positively with your anger, which may currently be causing problems in your life.
Effective Parenting Skills – This course teaches basic parenting techniques to resolve domestic conflict situations, empower parents to take authority without repressing their children’s self-expression and enhance relationship.
All these services are free to young people, parents and their families who are at risk of social exclusion.
All information is kept in the strictest confidence and only shared with your permission or if there is the likelihood of risk of significant harm to a child. _________________
